Urgent Need to Protect Egypt’s Coptic Christians

His Excellency President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi

and

His Excellency Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly

Arab Republic of Egypt

As an Armenian-American journalist, I am writing to express my deep concern about the ongoing treatment of Christians in Egypt—particularly members of the Coptic community. Christians have been an integral part of Egypt’s history for nearly two millennia, long before the rise of Islam, contributing richly to the nation’s culture, identity, and progress. Over the past years, the world has witnessed multiple incidents of violence against Coptic Christians—including the burning of churches, attacks on worshippers, and discrimination—that undermine their basic rights and dignity. Examples include:

Churches burned in Minya and other provinces following sectarian unrest.

Bombings of Coptic churches in Cairo, Alexandria, and Tanta that killed and injured dozens of worshippers.

Mob attacks on Coptic homes and businesses, often with little or no accountability for perpetrators.

Discrimination and harassment faced by Copts in employment, politics, and public life.

This pattern of violence and intolerance not only threatens Egypt’s Christian population—but also damages the country’s standing on the international stage. Egypt has historically been admired for its cultural richness and its role as a crossroads of civilizations. In fact, Armenians—including survivors of the Armenian Genocide—were welcomed into Egypt more than a century ago. They found safety, opportunity, and a peaceful life among Egyptians. That history of compassion stands in stark contrast to the troubling acts of violence and intolerance faced by Coptic Christians today.

I urge your leadership to take decisive action to protect religious minorities, uphold justice, and ensure equal treatment for all citizens—regardless of faith. Concrete steps to prevent sectarian violence, hold perpetrators accountable, and promote tolerance will not only safeguard Egypt’s Christian communities—but will also affirm Egypt’s commitment to human rights and religious freedom.

The current situation is giving Egypt a negative reputation internationally—which could have lasting consequences for the country’s relationships and global image. I hope you will reaffirm Egypt’s tradition of inclusiveness and leadership by taking meaningful steps to end this cycle of violence and discrimination.

Sincerely,

Vic Gerami
