TAAL's Statement on Israel’s Motion to Recognize the Armenia

Statement by the Truth And Accountability League (TAAL) on Israel’s Motion to Recognize the Armenian Genocide

June 28, 2026

The Truth and Accountability League acknowledges that Israel’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Gideon Sa’ar, has initiated a motion toward recognizing the Armenian Genocide. While symbolic steps can be noted, true recognition must lead to genuine action. Without commitment from the Knesset or a clear timeline, this remains largely symbolic and reversible.

TAAL also calls attention to the ongoing threats facing the historic Armenian Quarter of Jerusalem, where members of one of the world's oldest continuous Christian communities have been resisting efforts to illegally seize or permanently transfer control of significant portions of their ancestral land. Reports of settler incursions, intimidation, damage to Armenian property, and attempts to alter the status quo have raised serious concerns about the future of the Armenian presence in the Holy City. Recognition of the Armenian Genocide must also be accompanied by respect for the rights, heritage, property, and security of Armenians living in Jerusalem today.

We must also highlight the broader context. For decades, Israel denied recognition, supported Turkish lobbying, and recently facilitated Azerbaijan’s actions during the Artsakh Genocide. Now, with ongoing human rights challenges facing Palestinians, selective recognition raises serious questions about consistency.

Vic Gerami, Founder & Chair of TAAL, states: “Recognition is meaningful only when paired with accountability for all atrocities—past and present. True justice requires consistent commitment to human rights, not selective gestures.”

TAAL calls for genuine accountability and action across all human rights issues, not just symbolic recognition.
